To me Steve epitomized the Swarthmore ideal. He played basketball well, he was a scholar, he received a Rhoads Scholarship when he graduated, he was student body president, he was my fraternity brother and he was my friend. He went on to work for a non-profit devoted to social responsibility. He died way too young.
Steve was one of my roommates my freshman year. He was one of the most mature, level-headed and likeable people I had the privilege of meeting and carried the mark of leadership. I still mourn his early passing.
I attended the memorial service after Steve died in '91. A guy spoke who played basketball with him after college, and he gave a sporting metaphor that perfectly captured who Steve was: "He never took a shot he couldn't hit. And he never missed an open pass."
So nice, smart and friendly. He worked on the campaign of Michael Dukakis for the Presidency. Steve told me he would have had a high position in the Dukakis administration if Dukakis had won.
