What have you been up to since graduation?

I was a conscientious objector, under the draft law, for two years, then went to graduate school in economics at Harvard. For quite a few years after getting a PhD I worked on Dollars & Sense, a radical economics magazine (still alive) which I co-founded. Eventually I stumbled into more professional (or at least better paid) work in environmental and public policy economics, where I've stayed. Lately it's all been about climate and energy economics.

I've taught at UMass-Boston, UMass-Amherst, Tufts University, and recently at M.I.T., though never in a tenured or even tenure-track position. Most of my work has been in grant-funded research positions in and around academic life. I'm now at Synapse Energy Economics, a consumer/environmental-oriented consulting firm in Cambridge, MA, where I live. See my personal website, or look up the company, for details on the professional side of things.

Memories from your time at Swarthmore:

Too much to summarize here - you had to be there.

Extracurricular activities, books, creative products, athletic achievements:

I have returned to a pre-Swarthmore hobby, playing the trumpet, and have ended up in a serious-amateur brass band that plays New Orleans and other music in the Boston area, the Second Line Social Aid & Pleasure Society Brass Band. (We played at the March for Science in Boston in April 2017, see photo of me at that event.)

I've written a bunch of books, see my website for details. The latest and greatest, "Worst-Case Economics: Extreme Events in Climate and Finance", is due out in September 2017 from Anthem Press, a British publisher.

Athletic achievements??? At 70, I still bike to work.

What did you always want to do that you haven't done yet?

Leave a better world to my grandchildren's generation.
